According to company sources quoted by Kyodo News, the shop could be operational by December this year, with a second like it opening in Kawaguchi City, Saitama prefecture, next spring.
If the plan comes into fruition, Metro will become the first foreign company to debut in Japan as a wholesaler.
Together with Japanese trading house Marubeni Corp, Metro established Metro Cash & Carry Japan KK in Tokyo last year, a move many analysts believe to be laying the ground work for the start of wholesale operations.
