More than 250 farmers, scientists and officials have expressed concern that cross-contamination with non-GM crops could cause Queensland to forfeit its market advantage. According to the president of the Organic Producers Association, every other state has imposed a provisional ban on GM food production, even though the Australia’s Federal Government has approved the release of the country’s first GM food crop, canola.

Meanwhile, in Victoria opponents of GM technology have asked the state government to extend its ban on the introduction of GM crops, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The Network of Concerned Farmers believes more than 50 of the country’s wheat markets have a zero tolerance for any GM grain, and the risk and costs of cross-contamination are too high.
