Banga spent 33 years at Unilever. His last role at the consumer goods group was as president for global foods, home and personal care. Banga is currently an operating partner at private-equity firm Clayton Dubilier & Rice.

M&S chairman Robert Swannell said Banga would bring a “wealth of experience of global business and extensive consumer and brand knowledge” to the retailer.

Swannell added: “His insights will further support the board discussion on our strategy, set out by Marc Bolland in November 2010, to become an international multi-channel retailer.”
