Metro Group has appointed Akin Bayer as managing director of the group’s Austrian cash-and-carry operations.
The company said today (24 June) that Bayer will succeed Hans Gerhard Degen, who will retire after 41 years with Metro Group. Degen will become chairman of the supervisory board of Metro Cash & Carry in Austria in 2012.

Bayer began his career with the Metro Group in 1997 as head of real estate. He has worked as finance director in Turkey and the Czech Republic before becoming managing director in several countries. His most recent role was managing the company’s Turkish cash-and-carry division.
