Thai wholesale retailer Siam Makro has announced that it is to spend Bt500m (US$12.0m) on improving the fresh food sections of its 21 stores in Thailand, in a move which is expected to exert pressure on the country’s traditional wet markets.

Siam Makro president Suchada Ithijarukul said the improvements, which will include refurbishing and expanding retail space, would enable the company to better serve its core customers.

The retailer is targeting new customers such as restaurants and caterers, which have traditionally bought fresh food at Thailand’s wet markets, reported the Thai News Service.
