Vancouver, BC-based R&D company Burcon NutraScience Corporation has filed a composition patent to protect Supertein™, its second novel canola protein isolate.

The company said that the low-molecular-weight canola protein “exhibits both distinct and valuable functional and nutritional profiles”.

Supertein was developed to complement Puratein™, Burcon’s initial protein isolate from canola. It is designed as a protein ingredient for food applications as well as for nutritional supplements and non-food uses.

Johann F. Tergesen, president & COO, explained that the filing of this composition patent is important to Burcon’s overall patent strategy and protects the composition of the protein isolate itself, irrespective of how the protein isolate is manufactured or how it is used.
