The proposed factory would be six miles west of its current site in Pontefract, which Haribo said, under its plans, it would retain.

Haribo is working with the UK government’s Regional Growth Fund, a three-year fund established to encourage growth in the country’s private sector.

Should Haribo proceed with the plans for the Normanton site, around 286 jobs would be created “with the potential for further expansion”, the company said. Haribo currently employs 537 staff at the Pontefract site.

The company said it had been “investigation expansion plans for some time” to meet the “growing consumer demand” for Haribo products in the UK.

“The brand has grown ahead of expectations over recent years, allowing the manufacturing facility to near full capacity. Whilst this is good news it does lead to the requirement for further manufacturing capabilities in order to support long term, future growth,” Haribo explained.

“The new factory will allow the UK business to produce and manufacture a greater number of products in the UK, rather than importing from other Haribo businesses in the group. The potential is that over coming years the UK business will be in a position to export products as well as to supply to the UK market.”

According to figures from Nielsen, Haribo’s consumer sales rose 21% in 2010. The company’s share of gums and jellies sales by volume stood at 26.4%.
