Nestle has confirmed plans to reduce production of its Maggi brand ready meals in France, with the loss of 171 jobs.

Announcing the move, Nestle said Maggi has made “losses which are weighing on the company’s results” and as a consequence the company will refocus the unit.

Nestle Grand Froid is to shed 134 jobs at its production plant in Beauvais, while a further 37 sales and HQ jobs are to go, the company said.

“Three out of five production lines (at the Beauvais plant), essentially turning out fish dishes and single portion ready meals, are to be stopped,” a Nestle France spokeswoman told just-food today (30 March).

“The two remaining lines will concentrate on producing dual portions and family-size dishes such as tomato farci, lasagne, shepherd’s pie and mousaka,” she added.

The six ice cream production lines at the Beauvais plant are unaffected by the restructuring and the job cutbacks, which are scheduled to take effect at the end of the year or early 2012.

“Consultations will now begin with staff representatives on the voluntary redundancies,” the spokeswoman added.
