Japanese retailer FamilyMart has outlined its plans for expansion in South Korea, where it runs over 7,200 convenience stores.

The company has struck a fresh deal with local partner Bokwang that will see a new chain opened and plans for more stores in “market niches” in the country.

FamilyMart has operated in South Korea since 1990 and claims to be the number one c-store operator in the country. At the end of May, it had 7,267 stores in South Korea.

The retailer has over 20,000 stores across Japan, South Korea and other markets including Thailand and the US.

Japanese retailers, faced with a stagnant and ageing domestic population, have been looking to their international businesses to drive growth.
