The Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund (NOF) is to fund ten local initiatives across England to encourage people to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables each day, reported BBC News Online.
Research has shown that many people do not eat enough fruit and vegetables, while the unemployed and those on low incomes eat half the amount of fruit and vegetables than those on high incomes.
As well as teaching people how to cook with fruit and vegetables, the scheme will also introduce grow-your-own initiatives and farmers markets.
“Evidence suggests that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption significantly reduces the risk of cancer and it helps protect against heart disease,” Baroness Jill Pitkeathley, chairwoman of the NOF, was quoted by the BBC as saying.
