General Mills is considering whether to convert part of the space at a facility in Iowa to production.

The US food group is mulling a project that would see around 10,000 sq ft of warehouse space at the facility in Cedar Rapids.

Talking to just-food, a spokesperson said the move would “support our business operations”. The spokesperson refused to be drawn on what products could be manufactured at the site.

If General Mills decides to push ahead with the plans and receives approval for the investment, construction would start next year. The company said the building would be complete in early 2015.

Earlier this week, General Mills booked second-quarter earnings that were below Wall Street forecasts.

Lower US sales and an increase in ingredient costs weighed on General Mills’ profits during the quarter.
