New EU rules on the origin labelling of products including pork and poultry are to be introduced after a majority of members states backed the proposals.

From 1 April 2015, labels will carry information on the origin of animals for pork, goat, sheep and poultry products, plus were they reared and slaughtered.

According to the new rules, animals born, raised and slaughtered in the same member state can be labelled with the terms “Origin: Member State (or third country)”. In other cases, the rearing and slaughtering places will be indicated on the label.

“Under these rules, EU consumers will be able to know where the meat they buy comes from – a demand they have clearly expressed. Consumers will be able to make well informed choices taking into account the concept of ‘origin’, ‘reared’ and ‘slaughtered’, each concept being clearly defined at EU level,” a statement from The European Commission read. Similar rules already exist for fresh beef meat, it noted.

The Commission outlined its first draft proposal in September. The plans were adjusted to get “widespread support” among member states, Brussels said.
