David Cheesewright, the head of Wal-Mart’s operations in EMEA and Canada, is to be promoted to lead all of the retail giant’s businesses outside the US.

Cheesewright is to take the position of president and CEO of Walmart International in February, replacing Doug McMillon, who will become the president and CEO of the whole company.

Around 30% of Wal-Mart’s revenue comes from its 26 markets outside the US.

Announcing the appointment today (10 December), McMillon said Cheesewright “brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of innovation and governance. He added: “David is the ideal person to steer our next chapter of continued, long-term growth.”

Cheesewright joined Wal-Mart’s UK arm Asda in 1999 from Mars Inc. In 2005, he became COO and trading director at Asda. Three years later, Cheesewright became president and CEO of Wal-Mart’s operations in Canada.

In 2011, Cheesewright was handed a new role to head Wal-Mart’s business in Canada and its operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

He said he was “honoured” to lead all of Wal-Mart’s businesses outside the US.

“Through strong capital discipline, we will continue to invest in new stores and e-commerce growth, as well as productivity improvements that drive profitable growth and returns,” he said.
