US firm C.H. Guenther & Son has snapped up three bakeries north of the border in Canada.

C.H. Guenther & Son has acquired two firms based in British Columbia – Golden West Baking Co. and Gizella Pastry. It has also purchased Les Boulangeries Rene, located in Montreal. Financial details were not disclosed. All three sites were owned by Canadian businessman Rene Fluri.

Golden West Baking Co. and Les Boulangeries Rene both produce buns, rolls and English muffins for food retailers. Gizella manufactures frozen desserts including cheesecakes, layer cakes and brownies.

Dale Tremblay, president and CEO of C.H. Guenther & Son, said Fluri had “built an impressive array of businesses” that “service many of the same customers that we supply today but with an expanded geographical reach into Canada”.

He added: “The product capabilities are also very complimentary to both our European bakery business as well as our U.S. frozen dough and baked goods businesses.”

Fluri, who established Gizella as a retail pastry shop in Vancouver in 1960, said the sale “allows me to spend more time with family and enjoy some of the other important activities” in the Canadian city and Switzerland.
