South Africa has launched an investigation into claims from local poultry suppliers that rivals from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands are dumping products in southern Africa.
The country’s International Trade Administration Commission is looking into allegations processors from the three countries are dumping frozen bone-in portions in the five markets that make up the South African Customs Union – South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland.
The Southern African Poultry Association has claimed prices are being suppressed, hitting profits among local processors. Companies including Rainbow Chicken, which has said poultry imports have been a factor in falling earnings, have provided evidence to support the application.
“The applicant submitted sufficient evidence and established a prima facie case to enable the commission to arrive at a reasonable conclusion that an investigation should be initiated on the basis of dumping, material injury, threat of material injury and causality,” ITAC told just-food.
The commission said investigations of this nature take up to a year to complete.
