Italy exported €979.5m (US$1.13bn) worth of dairy products in 2002, compared to €985.7m in the previous year, according to a report from the Italian milk producers’ association Assolatte.

In 2002, Italy exported 193,698 tonnes of dairy products, compared to 179,889 tonnes a year earlier. A total of 135,600 tonnes, or 70%, of the exports were destined for EU member states.

Italy exported 36,358 tonnes to Germany and 33,515 to France. Exports to the US totalled 27,839 tonnes, reported the Italian News Digest.

In total, the milk and dairy sector generated turnover of €13.2bn for the year.

Assolatte said annual cheese consumption in Italy stands at 50kg per capita, with Italian favouring mozzarella and fresh cheese. Consumption of butter was 2.7kg per capita annually.
