Japanese confectioner Morinaga has booked an increase in first-quarter earnings and sales.
In the three months ended 26 March, net profit reached JPY514m (US$5.3m), up from JPY83m a year earlier. Morinaga said it benefited from lower advertising expenses and higher sales in the period.

Operating profit amounted to JPY770m from JPY46m a year earlier. Sales climbed 7.8% to JPY38.86bn.
