Russia has placed a temporary ban on the import of seed and ware potatoes from the EU, citing phytosanitary reasons.

Russia’s veterinary and pytosanitary service, Rosselkhoznadzor, said measures proposed by The European Commission to ensure phytosanitary safety of products exported to Russia do not meet Moscow’s requirements.

The agency said numerous controls on potatoes originating from Belgium, The Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Lithuania, Spain and the UK have shown the presence of micro-organisms that need to be quarantined.

Rosselkhoznadzor said a parasite – golden potato nematode – had previously been found in shipments of potatoes from the Netherlands.
