UK retailer Sainsbury’s has committed to moving all its fresh pork to being 100% British.

From 3 July, products including pork loins, chops and joints will all be British, the retail group said today (1 July). Sainsbury’s said the commitment comes ten years after it guaranteed all fresh chicken as British and enforces its commitment to British sourcing.

“Sourcing food closer to home and developing even stronger links with farmers is a key part of continuing to lead on fresh food,” said Sue Lockhart, head of agriculture at Sainsbury’s. “Our customers trust us to source the very best fresh food in a sustainable way and we’re pleased to announce fresh pork as our latest progress.”

The move follows the horsemeat scandal which hit the European food industry earlier this year. The saga has resulted in increased pressure on food retailers to shorten supply chains and source closer to home.

In March, Tesco said it would work to take complexity out of its supply chain in a bid to avoid future contamination scares. From July, all fresh chicken sold by Tesco will be sourced from within the UK.
