Brazilian food group BRF has opened a new innovation centre as part of plans to double its R&D spend by 2015.

The meat and dairy products group claimed the site, based in Jundiai in Sao Paulo, would “underscore its reputation as one of the most innovative companies in the world”. BRF said the former Sadia and Perdigao R&D facilities in Videira and Sao Paulo would operate out of the new site to capture “synergies”. The company could not be reached for immediate comment on the impact on jobs. Some 150 staff will work at the new facility.

BRF said the new site will have mini-production lines to allow the company to conduct tests.

“We now no longer need to depend on production units for undertaking tests. We shall be able to simulate large-scale production, project costs and test the parameters of processes and quality of the new products,” Nilvo Mittanck, BRF’s vice president for operations and technology, said.
