UK canned tuna producer Princes is to invest GBP6.4m (US$9.7m) in the expansion of its olive oil facility in Liverpool.

The food firm said it will install a new bottling line at the facility in Belvedere. The line is designed to boost capacity as well as reducing waste.

“The new line forms part of an ongoing programme of investment to ensure that all of our manufacturing sites remain leading facilities,” said Princes MD Ken Critchley. “As well as further driving efficiency, the move has created the capacity to ensure we can meet future growth trends and delivered significant environmental benefits.”

Princes said the investment will help consolidate it as the UK’s largest supplier of edible oils.

The investment comes eight years after Princes formed a joint venture with Archer Daniels Midland to produce, sell and distribute olive and seed oil products across the UK and continental Europe.
