French dairy co-operative Laïta is to invest EUR50m (US$64.8m) in the modernisation of its manufacturing base.

The investment, “to improve its mix of products, its competitveness and production quality”, is similar to an amount injected in 2012.

One of the plants to benefit from investment this year will be Laïta’s pressed cheese unit in Ploudaniel.

Laita did not go into detail on where the remainder of the investment will be spent but confirmed it is eyeing international expansion of its main Paysan Breton brand. The range includes butter, speciality cheeses, butter milk and fresh cream.

Laïta, which is looking to develop the brand in Europe, posted a 2011 turnover of almost EUR1.16bn.
