Mondelez International is bringing the manufacture of its Oreo biscuits to the UK for the first time as part of an investment in its Sheffield production facility.

The confectionery and biscuit maker has invested GBP6m (US$9.2m) in the addition of a new manufacturing line at the factory, which will produce Oreo biscuits initially and later in the year BelVita biscuits for the UK, Ireland and other European markets. The site currently produces confectionery brands Trebor, Maynards and Bassetts.

Oreos were first sold in the UK in 2008 but were never produced here before now. The brand is worth more than GBP1.3bn globally.

The new line is capable of producing over a million Oreos in 24 hours and forms part of a wider GBP50m investment in UK chocolate and biscuit manufacturing by the firm since 2010.

Maurizio Brusadelli, president of Mondelez International UK and Ireland said: “We are delighted to officially open the new Oreo line at Sheffield which clearly signals the importance of the UK as a manufacturing base for us. This investment is a first step – we hope to follow it with further investment and innovation in biscuits.”
