UK retailer Marks and Spencer is launching a clicks and bricks expansion strategy in the Netherlands.

The bastion of the UK high street is returning to the Netherlands with the opening of an Amsterdam-based store that will carry a food and non-food offering today (17 April). In addition to this, M&S plans to open a further two full-line stores in The Hague and Amsterdam in the coming two years.

Marks and Spencer has also entered into an agreement to open six Simply Food pilots at BP forecourts in “key locations” in Randstad. The new agreement is part of M&S’s plans to open franchise M&S Simply Food stores in Western Europe, the company said. The group established a similar agreement with BP in the UK in 2005 and there are now more than 160 M&S Simply Food stores at BP forecourts throughout the country.

As in the UK, the Dutch website will not include a food offer. The company added that it is launching its online non-food offer in Luxembury today.

Marks and Spencer retreated from Western Europe ten years ago. However, it seems the company is now focused on returning to growth in the region.

Marks and Spencer, which now aims to become a leading international and multi-channel retailer, relaunched its business in France in 2011. It will open a further three Parisian stores this financial year, the company revealed. M&S launched a website in Belgium last autumn and the group plans to open a flagship store in Brussels in 2015.
