Tesco-owned UK convenience business One Stop Stores is to trial a franchise model with local independent retailers.

The concept, One Stop said today (4 April), will allow independents to continue to run their own businesses whilst benefiting from its backing. Through the partnership, franchisees will also gain access to One Stop’s low-cost operating and distribution model, it added.

“Independents offer years of local relationships and commitment to their customers. We want to preserve this and in turn offer our expertise in distribution and store proposition,” said One Stop CEO Tony Reed.

“We and our customers want to see neighbourhood convenience shops thrive. Our franchising concept is about helping good independent family businesses make an even greater success of their stores.”

The 640-store retailer, acquired by Tesco from T&S Stores in 2003, indicated it would reveal more details on the trial in the coming weeks.

Once in operation, the franchisees would be competing against major players in the symbol group market including Booker’s Premier fascia, Budgens-owner Musgrave, Costcutter and Spar.
