US discounter Dollar General booked an increased in sales for 2012 as merchandising efforts, such as carrying a wider variety of food products, won over consumers.
Full-year net sales increased 8.2% to US$16.02bn. However, excluding the impact of the 2011 53rd week, net sales increased 10.4%. Same-store sales, excluding the extra trading week, rose 4.7%, driven by higher traffic and increased basket spend.

“The increase in sales of consumables outpaced non-consumables, with sales of snacks, candy, beverages and perishables contributing the majority of the increase throughout the year,” the company said.
Full-year operating profit increased by 11% to $1.66bn. Dollar General that its net income rose to $953m in 2012, compared to net income of $767m in 2011.
