Effective 1 June, Frank Curci, president and CEO of Tops Markets based in Buffalo, New York, will be assuming the new role as chief operating officer for Giant Food of Landover, Maryland. Curci, who joined Ahold in 1995 through the acquisition of Mayfair Supermarkets, will report to Dick Baird, president and CEO of Giant of Landover.

As a part of the shared services concept between Giant of Carlisle and Tops, Max Henderson, current vice president of operations and merchandising at Giant of Carlisle, will transfer to the newly created position of executive vice president and general manager of Tops. Tony Schiano, currently president and CEO of Giant of Carlisle will serve as the president and CEO of the combined Giant of Carlisle and Tops organizations.

In addition, the perishable merchandising shared services function has also been realigned. Jeff Martin, currently senior vice president of perishable merchandising at Giant of Carlisle, has been assigned to the position of senior vice president of perishable merchandising for Giant of Carlisle and Tops.

Sal Baio will move from his present position as senior vice president of perishable sales and merchandising to a new role as senior vice president of sales and merchandising, reporting directly to Henderson. In his new capacity, Baio will be responsible for the execution of all sales and marketing programs at Tops.

John Bussenger, currently senior vice president, human resources of Giant of Carlisle, has been promoted to executive vice president of human resources for the combined Giant of Carlisle and Tops operations.

Ahold said the executive changes are part of the final stages of the planned shared services concept which was launched in 2001, whereby the administrative operations of several Ahold USA operating companies were combined to reduce costs and create greater efficiencies and economies of scale.
