Developers Univerco Hydraulique Napierville, Quebec, and Canada’s Horticulture Research and Development Centre, say that previous attempts to mechanise the process have caused too much damage to cabbages to be viable.


In tests, 40 growers settled on a V-shaped knife that reproduces manual cuts, before sending heads up to a separator on an inclined rubber conveyor belt. Older machines have used conveyors made of metal rods, which were rough and caused too much bruising.
