The Indian government has for a second time blocked the entry into its country of a delivery of American foodstuffs, because of concerns that they may contain genetically modified material that is banned in India.

New Delhi’s Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) said that US agencies had “failed to submit an authenticated certificate that the consignment containing soya corn blend as food aid under ICDS programme does not contain the Starlink corn,” which is banned in India, said Indian press reports.

Import licences for the food have been sought by aid agencies, including Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The committee blocked a similar consignment of soya corn blend last November on the same grounds.
