The Thai government is urging young couples to give traditional Thai sweetmeats as Valentine’s Day gifts rather than foreign imports such as chocolate.

People will be encouraged to buy a number of Thai sweetmeats, including glace durian and coconut jelly, and egg rolls filled with prawns and dried pork.

The government said the project would not perhaps be very popular in the first year, but it remained confident that the project would gain support as the years progress.

Producers of sweetmeats have been told to package their products in special Valentine’s packaging to attract more buyers, reported the Thai News Service.
