Indian dairy giant Amul is to build a plant in West Bengal as it continues its expansion within its domestic market.
Amul’s new manufacturing unit in West Bengal will be able to process one million litres of milk per day and further boost the brand’s growth outside its home state of Gujarat, managing director Dr K Rathnam has told just-food.

“The land has been identified and the West Bengal Industrial Corporation is…finalising the formalities,” Dr Rathnam said. Once agreed, it will take 18 months to set up the new plant, he said.
The unit will primarily focus on milk but Dr Rathnam indicated the plant could look to produce other lines. “There will be a few value-added products like fermented drinks, ghee, paneer and ultra-high temperature [UHT] processing milk.”
Amul already has three contract manufacturing units in the north-eastern state. It also six of its own manufacturing units, including one at its headquarters in Anand in the western state of Gujarat.
