India’s largest dairy co-operative, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation, is to set up its first physical presence in a state where demand for dairy is on the rise.
The co-op behind the Amul brand will have bulk milk coolers and a milk collection unit in the state.
“Though we have a presence in Goa, this is the first time we will be buying milk directly from the farmers,” R. S. Sodhi, the managing director of GCMMF, said.
The co-op does sell three Amul-branded products in Goa that are manufactured in the state of Gujarat, also in the west of India but further north.
Sodhi said the unit will initially only cater for the market in Goa but indicated it could in future cater for neighbouring states, such as Maharashtra and Karnataka.
