Condiments maker French’s has reformulated 90% of its US and Canadian portfolio to contain no artificial flavours, colourants, dyes and high-fructose corn syrup.

The ketchup and mustard maker, owned by FMCG giant Reckitt Benckiser, said it had taken a year to change the products.

French’s has replaced existing ingredients with new flavours and “better ingredients” such as sugar and natural ingredients like tomatoes in the ketchup and turmeric in the mustard, to allow it to maintain the taste of its products.

“Consumers today are looking for better quality and better choices. French’s has met those needs – so instead of HFCS they use sugar, and removed any artificial flavours and colours and have added more better for you ingredients – more turmeric in the mustard, no HFCS in the ketchup. French’s as a company has thrived and will continue to stay relevant and number one. They hope to continue to grow the loyal consumer base they have while growing a more health conscious base in the millennials who may not realise the French’s portfolio is made of best in quality ingredients and taste and variety,” a spokesperson told just-food.

The spokesperson added the remaining 10% of products would be worked on over 2016. They include the French’s Fried Onions.

“[The] products are so very popular and people love them as they are – the company will look to make changes on that product without sacrificing any great flavour.”
