Coca-Cola is in talks to buy Brazilian dairy player Laticínios Verde Campo in a move that would see the soft drinks giant enter the country’s dairy sector.
According to a company source, the potential transaction would be made through local business Leao Alimentos, in which Coke owns a 50% stake. An application has been filed with Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE), which has already granted a first authorisation for the transaction.
Laticínios Verde Campo is based in Minas Gerais state. In its plant in Lavras the company manufactures yoghurts and cheeses. It is also market leader in lactose-free dairy products through the Lacfree brand.
The negotiation between the two companies is ongoing but there is no deadline for its completion, Coca-Cola assured just-food. The amount of the transaction was not divulged and Coca-Cola declined to comment further on plans to expand the Verde Campo brand.
“The potential expansion into the fresh dairy products market is part of the strategy to offer more beverage choices in the market,” said Coca-Cola.
