Many companies are coming around to the idea that older staff may be a considerable asset to their workforce, and Asda is far from the first to target the grey market. The company said its is expecting to create an average of 39 extra temporary jobs over the busy Christmas period at each store, or about 10,000 jobs nationwide.

The company is aiming to fill a third of these vacancies with employees over the age of 50. Recruitment scouts have been sent out to venues often frequented by older citizens, such as bingo halls and tea dances to hunt for potential bag-packers, store greeters and car-park attendants, reported the Guardian.
