The US group said the new facility represented its “biggest investment in India to date”.

Abbott has an R&D site in Indian city of Bengaluru that will, it said, work with the plant in Jhagadia to “create customised nutrition products that address the diverse and changing health needs of people in India”.

The company is aiming to source “up to 80%” of the ingredients used at the facility from local suppliers and has set up a programme to work with 1,500 dairy farmers to increase their milk supply.
