According to a new survey conducted by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, 62% of companies now consider the issue of food labelling to be very important, while 59% said they take seriously the problem of foreign substances in food products. Areas of improvement remain, however, with just 44% considering the issue of residual agricultural chemicals in food important, and 46% being concerned about illegal flavouring agents.

The survey, which was filled out by 121 companies, comes exactly one year after the first case of mad cow disease or BSE was discovered in Japan.

Almost half of the respondents to the survey said they have intensified efforts to respond to complaints from customers by employing more customer care staff.
