Canadian dairy cooperative Agropur has announced plans to close its plant in Chilliwack, British Columbia, as part of its optimisation programme in western Canada.
The plant closure will be completed by October next year. The facility currently employs 42 people. Affected employees will be entered into a support program and given the opportunity to apply for other positions within the group. Severance pay will be provided.

"We are operating in highly competitive and fast-changing markets and our goal, with Agropur's success in mind, is always to maintain our status as a leader in the Canadian dairy industry," said Robert Coallier, CEO. "To remain competitive, Agropur must review and optimise its processing operations on an ongoing basis. Following the recent acquisition of the Burnaby facility, Agropur has decided to consolidate its operations and redirect production to its two other plants in British Columbia."
Additional investments will be required at the Burnaby facility, the dairy processor said. Further details of this were not given.
