Fonterra is to lower the level of sugar in its Australian yoghurt brand Ski D’Lite by 25%.

The move, claims Fonterra, its producer and owner, is the equivalent of having one less teaspoon of sugar per serve than "any other leading low-fat flavoured yoghurt" on the market.

The dairy giant said the there was 14.6g of sugar per average 150g serve in the yoghurt, compared to 20.2g sugar previously.

It cited data from Aztec that it said showed  Yoplait 99% Fat Free contained 20.6g sugar, while Vaalia Low Fat Flavoured Yoghurt had 21.3g sugar per average 150g serve.

Brent Whelan, category marketing manager for yoghurt for Fonterra in Australia, said the change has been introduced to help those families that are looking for "simple ways to reduce sugar in their children's diets without compromising on taste or quality".
