Hochland, the German cheese maker, has set up a dedicated vegan subsidiary and moved to launch its first products in the category.

The company is selling a line of four spreads under the new Simply V brand in the specialist Veganz chain in Germany. All the spreads are made with a nut base. Hochland said “unlike many other manufacturers of vegan products” it uses no soy.

Hochland established the vegan-focused E.V.A. unit this spring. The group said the vegan category in Germany was “an interesting market segment with growth potential” and argued there are a “limited range of goods” available for vegan consumers.

E.V.A. is located in the German town of Oberreute, a town in southern Germany close to the Austrian border. Hochland’s head office is in Heimenkirch, some 10km north.
