Young's Seafood, the UK processor, has today (23 September) confirmed how it plans to use two plants that were under threat after the end of a contract to supply Sainsbury's.

In July, the company outlined plans that could have led to the closure of two processing sites in Scotland, hitting over 900 jobs.

However, after talks with employee representatives, Young's will keep the Spey Valley site at Grantown-on-Spey open, keeping the traditional smoking facilities at the site. The second plant, in the town of Fraserburgh, will stay open with a reduced operation focused on smoked ready-to-eat products. The moves will see Young's retain around 250 jobs across the two sites.

The manufacturing of other products will gradually transfer to alternative Young’s sites in Scotland and England by May. The phasing of this plan is subject to consultation with our retail customers.

Young's chief executive Pete Ward said: "We recognise the importance of the Fraserburgh and Spey Valley factories to their local communities and we are moving forward with a plan that will retain jobs at both of the sites."
