Belgian bakery firm Lotus Bakeries is to expand its plant in Courcelles after deciding not to rebuild its waffle factory in Meise that was burned down in June.

Lotus had temporarily transferred the production of its Liege waffles, vanilla waffles and soft egg waffles to Courcelles in order to meet short-term demand, after a fire broke out at the factory 80 kilometres further north in Meise. The factory produced waffles for France and the UK.

The company had considered a number of options including rebuilding the plant and building a facility near Meise. It has decided it will no longer rebuild the Meise production facility but will expand the Courcelles plant.

"This will enable us to accommodate all waffle and galettes production in one large and efficient production facility."

Lotus said the move puts 71 jobs at risk. Talks have started with employee representatives and Lotus said it is looking at ways of finding roles at Courcelles and other sites in Oostakker and Lembeke.
