US retailing giant Albertsons has named Jim Gentile president of its Northern California operating division.

Gentile was most recently senior VP, marketing and merchandising, at the Midwest Division of Albertsons. He originally joined the company as a produce clerk at Jewel in 1967, before holding positions of increasing responsibility in store management and becoming merchandiser in 1984. He was named director of marketing at the Midwest Division in 1988 and then VP, Chef’s Kitchen and Bakery Merchandising in 1991.
With an investment of over US$185m in new stores and remodels this year alone, Albertsons has identified Northern California as a strategic market for the company’s future growth.
The Northern California division of Albertsons operates 183 food and drug stores and employs over 15,000 associates.
“Jim’s extensive background in marketing, operations and distribution, combined with his proven teambuilding and leadership skills, will provide strategic direction to ensure that our increased capital investments are achieving a customer focused approach to growth in Northern California,” commented Peter Lynch, president and COO.
