Ebro Foods has said the acquisition of French sandwich firm Roland Monterrat will help it get ahead in a category in which it is struggling to grow market share.

The Spanish group launched sandwiches in France under local brand Panzani last year. It has however struggled to capture growth in a what it believes is a competitive segment, dominated by local players Sodebo and Daunat.

"We launched sandwiches through our French business Panzani which also sells rice, and premium fresh pasta. We've been looking to continue growth in fresh products and sandwiches is a particularly profitable part of the business," an Ebro spokesperson told just-food.

Ebro yesterday announced the acquisition of Roland Monterrat, which sells its sandwiches and Croque-Monsieur products in French supermarkets, from majority shareholder MBO Partenaires and other minority investors.

"We lacked the expertise and knowledge and needed the know-how that a company like Roland Monterrat brings, to help us get ahead of competitors," the Ebro spokesperson added.
