Florette has launched what is claimed to be the UK’s first year-round salad growing operation.

The operation, known as Angflor and based in East Anglia, cultivates babyleaf salad varieties exclusively for Florette, including lambs lettuce, rocket, ruby chard and Florette PepperCress.

Poly tunnels provide protection from the elements and allow year-round growing, reducing the need for European imports and helping to provide “fresher and higher quality leaf” to British shoppers by reducing the time taken from field to supermarket shelf.

Neil Sanderson, managing director for Florette’s operations in the UK and Ireland, said: “The vision that drives our category-leading business forward, is to be the hallmark of the freshest and finest quality products, so it is vital that our grower network is as efficient and sustainable as possible to ensure that we can deliver this superior freshness and quality 100% of the time.

Patrick Bastow, managing director of Angflor, added: “Last year, Florette identified that climate change was the key challenge facing UK salad growers. The development of Angflor therefore provides confidence to growers that there is a bright and sustainable future ahead for horticulture in this country.”
