"This is a terrible day for workers, for Cadbury and for Tasmanians," said AMWU Tasmanian Secretary John Short. "These aren’t just jobs for today – these are jobs that should be lasting into the future. This factory has been here for over 90 years. Some of the people at Cadbury – their parents and their grandparents worked here. But where are their kids going to work?"

Representatives for Cadbury Australia did not respond to requests for comment at time of press.

Mondelez has focused on reducing its costs and trying to increase efficiency across its global production network. In the UK, Cadbury has seen jobs cut as the group invests in automation in production.

The union said it is working over "the next few days" with Cadbury management to determine how the redundancies will roll out. The AMWU said it hopes all redundancies will be voluntary.
