McCain has put plans for a US$100m plant expansion in Burley, Idaho, on hold as it reportedly “re-evaluates market conditions”.

Citing Burley officials, the Idaho Statesman said plans for the expansion which was expected to create 100 jobs were put on hold but are “definitely not cancelled”.

The expansion was announced in August last year when the Canadian food producer said the investment formed part of its North American growth strategy.

The investment would add a third production line which was expected to be operational by the end of 2015. The increase in capacity would allow “more flexibility” in McCain’s supply chain to meet increasing demand for potato products in the US, in addition to export markets such as Asia and Latin America, the firm said.

McCain did not respond to requests for comment from just-food.
