UK supermarket retailer Asda is to pay £550,000 (US$896,850) in compensation to a woman who was injured after slipping on a mushroom in one of its stores.

The Wal-Mart subsidiary admitted liability for the accident that left 44-year-old Beverly Jackson of Hertfordshire confined to a wheelchair after a hip operation failed.
Jackson was diagnosed with damaged fingers after falling at her local Asda store in 1997 but late the following year she was forced to give up her job because of increasing pain in her hip. She was given an artificial joint in 1999 but it failed and had to be removed.
Claiming that Jackson’s hip problems would have occurred even if the accident at the store had not happened, Asda took the case to the Court of Appeal. The chain has now withdrawn its appeal and it agreed yesterday [Thursday] to settle Jackson’s claim and pay her legal expenses, reported BBC Online.
