A District Court hearing due to decide whether the federal government can shut down a meat packing plant accused of lack of hygiene has been postponed from yesterday [Thursday] to today to give the parties involved an opportunity to settle.

The USDA is trying to withdraw its inspectors from a Nebraska Beef plant in Omaha, on the grounds that the company has a track record of unsanitary conditions and poor food safety systems that have resulted in contaminated meat. Non-compliance files drawn up by USDA inspectors reveal the discovery of fecal matter on beef carcasses, reported the Associated Press.

However, Nebraska Beef claims it has remedied handling errors at the plant.
