US food group Hillshire Brands has announced it will close a plant in Alabama making breakfast foods, with the loss of 1,100 jobs.
Hillshire said keeping the site in Florence would “not allow us to meet our efficiency or long-term profitability expectations”.

Production of breakfast sandwiches and sausages will be moved to other Hillshire sites.
“Closing our Florence facility was a very difficult decision to make,” Tom Hayes, Hillshire’s chief supply chain officer, said. “For many years, these employees dedicated themselves to running a quality operation, which they have done exceptionally well. Unfortunately, after looking at our business, we determined that this facility will not allow us to meet our efficiency or long-term profitability expectations.”
